Manhattan

1 1/2 oz Rye Whisky

2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Combine all ingredients into a mixing glass, fill with ice and stir well for 20 seconds. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a brandied cherry.

Named not only after one of my favourite spots on the planet, but it’s also one of the first real drinks I was introduced to many years ago when I began to imbibe. Prior to that, I was divulging in what could only be described as a college coma of cheap beer, sugar bombs otherwise known as coolers, and so-called tequila shots. At that point, I hadn’t started my journey to discover wine either. So, all in all, it was truly a forgettable time, from an imbibing perspective.

I can’t quite recall where I discovered my first Manhattan, but it would open up a whole new world to me of bourbon and whisky-based drinks.
